Rant

I'm supposed to be studying for a test tomorrow, but I have thoughts.

Every year, Spokane has a race called Bloomsday, and every year they have a new t-shirt for it. This year the shirt features what I think is supposed to be a hummingbird, but in a Northwest Coast design. It's pretty, but it bothers me because people can't seem to get it through their heads that Spokane is not part of the Northwest Coast, the geographic region nor the culture region. Using a Native design like that makes about as much sense as if they'd used it in the Boston Marathon, or if Spokane had used Navajo designs from the southwest. No relation to the city or region. Spokane is part of the Plateau, both geographically and culturally. You will not see the Spokane, Kalispel, Coeur d'Alene, and so on producing designs like you see on totem poles.

Sorry, although it seems trivial to some, stuff like this just irks me. Spokane seems to be pretty good about representing and including local tribes, but this is just dumb.
